Transportation:
Pedestrian and Bike Paths

Our Position:
Bill Number: HB926-928
Sponsor: Rep. Jan Jones
Legislative Session: 2006

HB 926 and HB 928 would require the GA DOT to build paths for pedestrians and bicycles along with roads in the state road system when those roads are “constructed, reconstructed or undergoing major resurfacing if … multiuse paths … are included in the applicable county or municipal comprehensive plan.”  This is a bold measure, which raises these paths to the same level of statutory concern to the GA DOT as bridge reconstruction and provision of guardrails.

Background

The Asphalt Mob won’t like this bill, but they are unlikely to be seen in serious opposition either—the most likely outcome for this proposal is that there will not be “enough time” to take it up before the legislative session ends.  But if nothing is sought, nothing useful will be obtained.  Rep. Jones deserves commendation for trying to make the DOT do the right thing, and maybe someday she will prevail.
