Workshop Descriptions (.doc)

Global Warming Film Festival8:00 pm Friday

Screening and discussion of several topical films on Global Warming at Nalls Auditorium.

The State of Georgia's Coast9:00am Saturday

David Kyler, Director of Center for Sustainable Coast (www.sustainablecoast.org)

Now more than anytime in the past 100 years, coastal Georgia stands at a crossroads. As we see thousands of acres of land being developed every year in the eleven counties of this region, more and more residents are questioning the accumulating consequences. Public opinions express deep concern that the landscape, environmental quality, and character of the coast are slipping away. The Center's State of the Coast Report presents extensive information and analysis to stimulate public dialogue and raise awareness about critically important issues affecting coastal Georgia and its five watersheds. These issues must be responsibly resolved if we are to build the consensus and commitment needed to shape our shared future, using means that are within our grasp. We urge all concerned citizens, decision-makers, and other stakeholders to review and comment on our report. A copy of the report will be available and can be obtained on their website.

Bicycle Trip 9:00 - 11:30 Saturday

We rode across the island and stopped at the Bloody Marsh monument about half way. The first leg ended at the light house where there were places to buy refreshments. Riders were also able to walk out onto the pier and see what they were catching that day. We rode back by a different route. Pace was slow -- good for younger and older riders.

Beach Hike, St. Simons9:00 - 11:00 am Saturday

We walked to the lighthouse, and then along the beach.

Kayaking$25/person 8:00 - 11:15 Saturday, 1:15 - 4:30 Saturday, and 9:00 - 12:00 Sunday

We learned the basic skills of kayaking while exploring the scenic Marshes of Glynn. Launching from a private dock, this trip was an easy and informative way to discover why kayaking is one of the fastest growing sports today.

Shore Birds Walk$5/person1:30 - 5:00

1:30 to 5:00 Bird Watching Outing with Bob Springfield. Lydia Thompson, Executive Director of Georgia's Colonial Coast Birding and Nature Festival, led us on a two-mile marsh and beach walk along the St. Simons East Beach area. Lydia helped us spot and identify Georgia's shore birds. She also told us how changes in the environment affect these birds. Check out Lydia's blog at http://www.coastalgeorgiabirding-lydia.blogspot.com/

Leisurely Bike Ride, St Simons1:00 - 3:00 Saturday

Mirza led us on a leisurely bike ride around the southern end of St Simons Island.

Georgia Chapter Response to Global Warming1:00 - 1:45 Saturday

Georgia's Conservation leaders discussed the chapter response to Global Warming, including Cool Cities, R.A.I.L., etc.

Shrimp Boat Tour and Presentation $32/person3:00 - 5:00 Saturday

Shrimp Boat Tour - Capt Larry Credle (pronounced Cradle) The only United States Coast Guard certified 49 passenger steel shrimp vessel. Using try nets, the crew dragged for a short period of time to minimize damage to sea life. When the net was pulled out of the water you could see many kinds of sea creatures; the shrimp, as they are caught, were boiled on the boat and given to the passengers to eat and the other creatures tossed back to sea. This is a research vessel and keeps records for the State of Georgia on what is caught and at what time. It has an enclosed propeller so sea creatures will not be damaged. On this trip, we learned about this DNR Research project, the ecology of the shrimp industry, and issues related to trawling.

Long Bike Ride 9:00 - 12:00

Mirza Balic led us on an extended bike ride to the north end of the island. This trip was for serious bikers only.

Is God Green? 9:00 - 10:00 Sunday

We discussed the role of organized religion in the environmental movement. Alan Jenkins, back by popular demand, led the discussion.

Dolphin Tour$25 per person9:00 - 10:30 Sunday

A 90-minute tour of inland waters. An opportunity to see dolphins in the sound and views of the Golden Isles.

Kite Flying 9:00 - 11:00 Sunday

Dave Durand led a group to the beach near the lighthouse to enjoy a morning of kite flying. Dave is a great teacher; he gave pointers to those who had never successfully flown before.

Legislative Update10:00 - 11:30 Sunday

Mark Woodall and Neil Herring informed us about the upcoming legislative session, and explained how we can impact the legislative process.
