The Sierra Club and the Stop I-3 Coalition present...
| What's I-3? | Joseph LeConte Group of the Sierra Club | Stop I-3 Coalition |
It costs over $25 million to build each mile of interstate highway through the mountains, according to University of Kentucky studies. We got to thinking we could do lots of things for the cost of just a mile or two—and lots more with the billions it would cost to build the whole thing.
We bet you've got ideas, too. Send us what you could do with your cool millions. We'll send these ideas to our Governors and members of Congress.

I would study if kudzu could be used to produce ethanol. It would solve two big problems if it was feasible.
Take Care Of People Instead Of Paving Mountains 0 comments
I think they should use the money to open more rehabs for drug users! So when the get arrested they spend their jail sentence in rehab and not in jail, so that they will get help and hopefully change for the better! You could also use the money to help with the up keep of small towns!
Clean Up Our Forest Roads 0 comments
I think they should use the money to help maintain the national forest! Help clean up where people have throw tires over lookouts and trash! If they can't drive on the roads we already have, then don't drive on them!
Give A Boost To Small Businesses 0 comments
I would have a contest for the brightest idea for a fruitful business that would support my community and help feed the souls of people, teach them how to fish and keep them focused and busy on that project in joy.
Celebrate Local History 1 comments
Put glitter on the highways we already have.
Fund Conservation 0 comments
Begin funding the "The Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965. This fund has not been funded for a while. The money is used to purchase private land to add to the US Forest Service to protect it for future generations. There are some areas that are still in need of protecting. Other than that, pay down the national debt.
Don't Build Them If You Can't Maintain Them 0 comments
Existing interstates such as I-95 in South Carolina are in desperate need of maintenance. I-95 is vital to Florida,Georgia, and South Carolina for hurricane evacuation. Before we pump millions if not billions into building NEW Interstate highways we should maintain the interstate highways that already exist!
Pay Off The Debt 0 comments
Instead of wasting 25 million dollars on paving a needless highway, this country could really use that money to help pay off our war debt!!
Support Our Troops 0 comments
Our military is worn down, and coming home with serious emotional problems. Thousands more are injured, and receiving terrible care. Please, divert this $25 million to the military, especially the Marine Corps, which is the hardest hit. They are giving their lives for you. Please, don't leave them stranded.
Help The Community 0 comments
Maintain our parks. Open meth rehabs.
We Actually Need Other Transportation Projects 0 comments
There is desperate need of better paying jobs here in Atlanta, GA, but if the money has to be used for transportation why not build light rail parallel with I-75 from Wade Green to connect with MARTA. Light rail would also work better than buses as buses tend to pollute more and add to traffic problems.
Maintain Our Parks Instead Of Paving Them 0 comments
Our state and national parks have lost a tremendous amount of funding since the beginning of the Iraq war. Perhaps the federal money could go to salaries for new national park rangers and much needed supplies for park maintenance.
A Successful Idea From WNC 0 comments
I would use the $25 million to support the election of a representative who represents his constituents rather than special interests.
The Obvious 0 comments
The federal dollars should go the the obvious...begin paying off our federal credit card (aka the national debt) and then cut the credit card up by sending new budget managers to Washington.
State money should go straight to health care issues. States will save money in the long run if EVERYONE has preventative care.
Other Transportation Is More Important 0 comments
Let's be realistic. This (I-3) is a bad, bad use of tax dollars. We could add a lane to I-85 in each direction from Atlanta to the SC line. This stretch is terribly congested and the lanes are needed. MARTA could be made into a real mass transit system with service into Gwinnett, Cobb and other metro counties. I-3 is an environmental disaster and a waste of our hard earned tax dollars. Senators Isakson and Chambliss need to back away from and stop this terrible project.
Healthy People 0 comments
Since millions of Americans don't have health care, and we are the only industrialized country in the world without it...set up a national health care system.
Off The Roads, On To Rail 0 comments
I would buy some new cars for Amtrak. People will ride trains, but there aren't enough of them. 25M might buy 20 cars. Spread around the country, this would take cars off the roads and help clear the air.
Millions of Americans drive because in many cases, there is no viable alternative.
Serve People 0 comments
Use it to clean up our environment and take care of the millions of homeless in OUR country. Not to mention folks who barely get by while our government officials get increases left and right.
Develop The Appalachian Economy 0 comments
Here in the 9th congressional district in Va. Our congressional representative has invested our tax $$ in building business incubators, industrial parks, and the installation of fiber optics and broad band communications. We are fortunate in our part of Appalachia to be going in this beneficial direction. I suggest that Your tax $$ should be spent as wisely as ours.
Don't Make The Deficit Any Bigger 0 comments
I have only plain, common-sense ideas here, that are fairly obvious. If we're talking about re-directing federal money, the answer is quite simple: pay down the budget deficit. If it is state money, mass transit first or maintenance/repair of existing roads & bridges second.
...Seriously 0 comments
Pay down the budget deficit.
Balance the Federal budget.
Hello...
Anti-Litter Campaign 0 comments
Spend the money to ask people to stop littering. Also, spend money to clean up litter. NC highways look like a pig-pen and it is getting worse every day.
Education Is More Important 0 comments
With the money that would go to building I-3, let's instead pay all of our public school teachers for their hard work and make teaching a more attractive job to intelligent college grads.
Fund Independent Education 0 comments
Spend the money changing our educational institutions to fix the 50% drop-out rate:
Water For The World 0 comments
I have heard a figure of $40 billion dollars to have the whole world supplied with clean drinking water. Small change next to the highway bill, the energy bill, and the extra-budget war funding.
Fix What We've Got 0 comments
I would fix the 9% of the interstate system that is listed as being in poor condition. The Federal Highway Administration says it doesn't have the money to perform maintenance on existing interstate highways.
At Least Find A Better Route 0 comments
If they want a freeway from Savannah to Knoxville so badly, why not route it along U.S. 25 through South Carolina from Augusta, GA to Greenville, SC? From there it can hook up to I-26 and onward to Knoxville, TN. This route would cost way less and would be less destructive. (I know any highway spending could best be used elsewhere, but some politicians are too pig-headed to let go of their build-it ideas.)
A Better Transportation Idea 0 comments
How about spending it on sidewalks for our communities? Today, I saw a woman pushing her baby carriage next to the curb on a busy 7-lane road—only two blocks from the MARTA Transit Station. Surely, we can do better for than that!
Improve Transportation For All Of Us 0 comments
I would like to see the money used for mass transit and to add bike lines to roads in rural areas near Atlanta.
It's Simple 0 comments
Feed People
Fund Our Real Priorities 0 comments
I'd give the money to rural counties for schools and road improvements. In that way, the Bush Administration will have to come up with another excuse for trying to sell public lands.
Care For The Young 0 comments
I would build boarding schools in Kenya to feed and care for AIDS orphans.
Trains! 0 comments
Commuter rail service to Atlanta is estimated at $1 million a mile. Daily trains from Athens could be up and running for less than three miles of I-3.
Really Help Local Economies 0 comments
I would use the money to buy Wal-Mart and put locks on their doors, selling all of their inventory to local small business owners at prices lower than they could buy from their suppliers.
Leave A Legacy 1 comments
Buy private land and make it protected/public.
Stop Drilling on Padre Island 0 comments
I would buy out the mineral rights under Padre Island National Seashore.
