Savannah Harbor

GOAL: To protect the ecology and ecosystems at the mouth of the Savannah River and area coastal aquatic biodiversity. To restore the local fresh water estuaries and to support no harbor deepening if it harms the environment.

OVERVIEW: The US Army Corps of Engineers have been studying the proposal to deepen the Savannah River from 42 to 48 feet for the last 15 or so years. The environmental impacts range from destruction of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, loss of freshwater marsh, decreased dissolved oxygen and aquatic life, threats to Savannah's drinking water, air quality, and the list goes on. No study has looked at how the shipping industry works along the entire East Coast and where expansion would be best suited. The jobs proponents claim will result are not documented anywhere either. Cost to Georgia taxpayers, $32 million in the 2011 budget, $600 million if the federal government doesn't step in (which so far it hasn't).
