It was a slightly
gloomy morning, on Saturday, September 26, but that did not deter
26 Sierrans and volunteers from Hands On Atlanta from participating
in our Fourth Rivers Alive Clean Up. We met at 9-ish at the 19th
Century Village at Life University to sign in and collect our new
2009 t-shirts.
Then, well rewarded, each group set out to collect trash from Rottenwood
Creek as it winds through Life University's lovely campus. After
the floods, we figured one of two things would happen: either there
would be mounds of trash, deposited as waters swept across parking
lots and streets, or there would be very little, since Life's stretch
of Rottenwood Creek is very near the headwaters, and everything
would have been washed downstream. And, in fact, there really wasn't
as much trash as we have found in past years. However, we did manage
to collect a total of 35 bags of garbage, including a vast amount
of Styrofoam bits and pieces, a tire and wheel, seven pieces of
clothing, 106 plastic bags, 109 fast food containers and 2 strings
of Christmas lights.
We found a tea kettle, to be added to the permanent collection that
Ina has of found objects. And Kobus found a yellow jacket nest.
Three people slipped and fell in the water, but only dignity was
injured.
Mark, Executive Chef, admirably grilled burgers and hot dogs. Ina's
fruit salad met with universal approval, as did Rush and Angie's
green salad. And who ever brought the pumpkin spice cookies deserves
great applause! Carina did a terrific job coordinating the event.
And the youngest Sierran ever to attend a clean up, one-month old
Kara Hutton, slept blissfully as her parents cleaned the Creek!

As you can see,
last year's clean was a lot of hard work... but it was also
a lot of fun!
