Atlanta Group Sierra Club Executive Committee Minutes

Agenda: An agenda was passed out.


Minutes: The July 99 minutes were not available as Mark Alexander did not submit them.


Conservtn: Janet motioned to adopt opposition to the deepening of the Savannah River harbor. Ted seconded motion. Alan amended to encourage Chapter to adopt this measure. Motion carried without opposition. Larry discussed USFS preferred alternative (Rolling alternative "I") and stated that this is a move in the right direction. In October 1999 the next round of public involvement meetings will start and continue through January 2000. Chris asked if USFS plan done nationwide; answer is "no", just affects Southern Appalachian Forests. Larry will try to get Ellicott Rock extension added to national wilderness designation through Senator Cleland's office.


Retreat: Janet Westervelt mentioned that Chapter's Retreat (called a Gathering) will be October 22-24 at Camp Wahsega in Dahlonega. Chapter will be giving away canvas bags (order to be split 50/30 Chapter/Atlanta).


Bylaws: Ted is to type up existing and new bylaws by next meeting.


Programs: September: Brent Martin, Georgia Forest Watch Executive Director, will talk about the new Forest Service planning process. For October, REI will discuss canoe camping. November has Backyard habitats as the program. January's program will feature Dee Cline discussing Inner City Outings. Neill Herring will do the legislative program in February. March will feature another slide show by Virginia Dunbar on the Galapagos Islands. April is uncertain, but may have the local tours and walks of the Atlanta area by a local author.


One Club: A national effort is starting to mix conservation and outings. Discussion centered around simplifying this program in order to get working in the Chapter. A motion was made and carried to present an implementation plan to Chapter as time allows.


Treasurer: $6,700 in checking account and running $1,800 above budget. A proposal that the Atlanta Group provide seed monies to the Chapter in order to get the "One Club" concept started in Georgia.



Strm Watch: Rivers Alive stream cleanup will be Saturday October 16 9 am to 1 pm. Janet will be connecting with the Peavine Watershed Alliance to help clean Peavine Creek. Rivers Alive is a statewide cleanup campaign. Cleanup includes trash pickup, pull out kudzu, and maybe stream bank stabilization. Free T-Shirts and lunch. Flyers to go out to Gwinnett and Cobb groups and put on web page.


Store: No Report.


Outings: No Report.


Election: Five people are running for three slots (Alan, Chris, Herb, Carolyn and Mark Alexander). Voting due by 10/15/99. Need people to help count.


Membrshp: National membership committee will be meeting in Atlanta October 29-31. They will be meeting at Chapter office. We need to provide food and refreshments. Sevananda Co-op will highlight a non-profit organization for a month. We are asking to find someone to hand out materials each Saturday. Sevananda indicated that some monies might be passed to us. REI would like a volunteer to set up a table 18 Sept, 25 Sept, 2 Oct to hand out materials and answer questions. Ad for Creative Loafing was placed.
