Atlanta Group Sierra Club Executive Committee Minutes

Date and Time: 2 March 1999 19:30-21:10

Location: Alan Toney's home

Attendees: Mark Alexander, Herb Bastin, Ted Jackson, Alan Toney, Larry Winslett

Quorum: Present

Agenda: There was no agenda.

Minutes: The February 99 minutes were adopted as written.

Program: In April, someone (Janet Westervelt nominated) is needed to introduce Alan and his Chattahoochee River presentation. For May, Ellen Sutherland will discuss CAFO (Confined Animal Feedlot Operations) and her trip to Utah. For June, Virginia Dunbar will do a slide show of her trip to Antarctica and the penguins there. July is a summer party, maybe a potluck at Alan's house or Keith & Shirl Parson's cabin in Dahlonega. For August, Tracy Nichols would do a show on disappearing amphibians (done one for Centennial Group). For September, Herb Bastin would do a slide show on a activist trip he will be doing in Maine and the proposed Maine Woods National Park. Alan received a telephone call from a lady who wants to address the group regarding intimacy relationship development and dreams. Proposed to ExCom and ExCom member decided that this subject would not be appropriate or in focus with the goals of the Sierra Club.

Treasurer: Larry Winslett's mailing for hogs for Josh Marks (Chapter) to do the mailing. Need to copy stamps receipt form to turn in to Chapter for reimbursement. Reported ahead of budget. We still need to submit $1,000 for 1999 Newsletter costs. Alan Toney requested $50.00 from Group for cost of doing slide show. Chris Adams, a profession photographer, needs $100 for the film and processing and would volunteer to do the nature photography. Larry seconded motion and motion passed without dissent.

Retreat: The Georgia Chapter is planning a retreat to be held at Unicoi State Park.

Store: Not much information. Susan ? ordered some calendars from 1998; Herb returned 50% for 1998. This year, Herb is only sending back 10% (about 20 calendars). About 30% were sold at cost. It was a very successful year.

Outings: A training session is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 at REI (I-85/Clairmont) from 10 am - 5 pm. Call Herb or Lee for details. Gautum Bhan is doing own training in Savannah the weekend before. Lee has list of applicants. Larry wants to have an overview of conservation issues included. Larry and his wife raised a question about Dockery Lake and Waters Creek hike of 5-6 miles (one way downhill) to allow for conservation of the wisdom of a proposed Forest Service road.

Conservtn: Mark did not have anything to add. Larry stated that about 60 persons appeared for a North Georgia meeting to discuss plans about water, forests, wildlife issues. People showed up from every county targeted except Rabun. Chapter priorities include: 1) a lawsuit filed regarding migratory birds had a Federal Appellate Judge side with Sierra Club; 2) Road moratorium extended 18 months in Forest Service areas; 3) Riparian areas must be considered as top priority for all areas. Cohutta Wilderness had a prescribed burn to reduce fuel on ground. Georgia Forest Watch wants Sierra Club to sign on with them on their Forest plan alternative. Larry and Georgia Forest Watch will meet with USFS Superintendent Martin next week on plan.

Strm Watch: Four people showed up but didn't find anything living in Peavine Creek.

Storm Drain: Alan has stencil in truck for painting a sign over manhole covers on side of road. Riverkeeper and Clean & Beautiful do this already. Ok to do this in City of Atlanta, DeKalb, Cobb counties. Decatur is unknown. Have two kits available. Need table set up for meeting.

Soil Water District: City of Atlanta is still on probation and that is holding up runway expansion.

Fundraiser: The Non-essentials performed at Ya-Ya's in Decatur to a packed house. Need a fundraiser.

Revitalize: Need to snag people coming into meeting for hands-on work or set up a social agenda as motivation. A lot of social aspects neglected; usually single women predominate over single men.
