Minutes of November 2000 Atlanta Group ExCom Meeting

Atlanta Group Sierra Club Executive Committee Minutes Date and Time: 08 November 2000 19:20-20:35

Location: Ted Jackson's House

Attendees: Herb Bastin, Ted Jackson, Alan Toney, Carolyn Weber, Janet Westervelt

Quorum: Present

Agenda: Agreed upon agenda used.

Minutes: The October 2000 minutes were distributed and accepted by acclamation.

Chair: Alan, who had undergone outpatient surgery earlier in the day and was not feeling great, reported that Chris Kaufman unofficially resigned from the Atlanta Group ExCom as Conservation Chair. We need to get the information from him regarding the Old Castle Concrete facility in the Tucker area. Steve Dennis is fired up about dealing with Old Castle. Alan reported that he would not be at the membership meeting in October (nor would Carolyn or Ted). Herb would handle store, Virginia Dunbar would do the refreshments, Kathleen ? would do the greetings. Alan stated we need a conservation chair badly and that he would work on this. Possible program for March could be the person who did the construction on how to build communal living space. This person may have done a presentation to the Atlanta Group 3-4 years ago.

Vice Chair: Janet was at the Chapter office making phone calls for the Gore campaign, along with seven others, and got a tee-shirt out of it. The Chapter Annual Retreat went well, with less than 100 people attending. Had good outings and workshops, but low attendance at workshops. People giving talks included the Altamaha Riverkeeper, Norman ? on Cumberland Island, Todd Daniels on population, Mike D'amico on the Atlantic Coast conservation. Jim Stephens won a conservation award for his turtle work on the Georgia coast.

Treasurer: $4,180 in checking account and running over budget. Pax World Fund investments has a balance of $6,380. Dues for the second and third quarters in 2000 have not been transferred to the group. Ted presented a detailed report of all transactions for the year and discussed various incomes and expenses. Additionally, a pro-forma budget was presented to the ExCom and discussed. The 2001 proposed budget is significantly lower ($3,700 v. $4,800) because the treasurer has discounted one quarter's expected revenues from the Chapter subvention. The 2001 proposed budget passed unanimously. A motion from Carolyn to move $1,000 from checking to the Pax World Fund account was made, seconded and passed.

Conservtn: There is no conservation chair and no report was given.

AdoptStream: On Adopt-a-Stream for October, Janet was away and Ted covered the monitoring, with Charles and Sue Sherrill assisting. Ted has put the results (only those found in the field logbook) of all Adopt-a-Stream results on the Atlanta Group website. Janet stated that other results were recorded on the sheets to be sent to the Adopt-a-Stream program. Janet wanted to thank Kathy Mansell for staffing the RiversAlive! coordinator role in mid-October. No one showed up from the Sierra Club this year to help do river cleanups. We've been doing the same stretch in the Peavine Creek watershed area for three years in a row.

Legislative: No report.

Outings: Herb reported that not too many outings are ongoing. An outings training workshop will be held this weekend, with maybe two new leaders attending. Arthur ?, Lee Thomas, Ed Scholl, and Herb Bastin are leading trips. Herb is bringing copies of the Hiking Trails of North Georgia to sell on outings.

One Club: The One Club gathering will be after the outing leadership training event with dinner at Lettuce Souprise You at 6 pm on Saturday 11 November 2000.

Membership: Kathy Mansell will staff the greetings table at the November meeting. Alan still receives membership materials from National Sierra Club.

Store: Herb reported that he is selling books at the outings training class. He sold one calendar at the Chapter Retreat. He will approach most of the regular calendar sellers to take 5 calendars each. Herb wanted to buy various Sierra Club fall sale items: 3-weekender bags ($3), 10-water bottles ($1), 10-walker design t-shirts ($5.50). He would drop the 2000 Earth Day t-shirts to $5.

Web Page: Ted reported that the web site has been updated and freshened again.

Program: Peter Kirby will do his southern Appalachian travels on November 14. In December's holiday party, Lue Elder will show computer slides of Mt. McKinley, Mt. Rainier and the Pacific Northwest. In January Bob Woodall will discuss the upcoming bottle bill. Neill Herring and Mark Woodall will do their legislative update in February. March and after are still open. Possible speakers include: Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Southface Energy Institute, Peter ? the Treeman.

Newsletter: The next deadline is early December. Need information from Bob Woodall on solid waste issues and from Herb on the One Club program.

Specl Events: For the holiday party Carolyn will do the flyers if Janet can find the file on her computer. Someone needs to bring basic items (plasticware, cups, drinks, napkins).

New Items: Carolyn Weber is resigning at the end of the year. Hege Legestrom will not participate, though on the ballot. Karen Hoover might participate on Atlanta Group ExCom. The location of the 4th Quarter Atlanta Group ExCom meetings will be at Carolyn Weber's house, starting at 7:00 pm, if she agrees.
