Atlanta Group Sierra Club Executive Committee Minutes
Date and Time: 02 May 2000 19:20-20:45
Location: Ted Jackson's House
Attendees: Herb Bastin, Ted Jackson, Lee Thomas, Alan Toney, Carolyn Weber, Janet Westervelt
Quorum: Present
Agenda: Agreed upon agenda used
Minutes: The April 2000 minutes were distributed and accepted with two corrections: Bianca Lee was the contact from Arthur-Anderson Consulting and Karen Hoover staffed the EFG table.
Chair: No report.
Vice Chair: Regarding Earth Day and other events, the Dogwood Festival had poor weather, no sales, and not much on going at the Eco-Village. Karen Hoover represented the Atlanta Group for that event. The service trip on Saturday morning had people pulling weeds, mulching trails and creating a habitat for two baby ducklings. The Decatur Jubilee was twice as big as in 1999. The early crew did not set up the store effectively and few items were sold. During the Inman Park festival we got to use the newly bought tent (~$200) because the booth was in full sun. Volunteers hawked petitions, signed up new members, sold T-shirts and a few books. Troy Brooks (Connolly Park Forest) along with Karen Hoover, Charles Cook, Karen Austin, Roberta Cook, Hege Lizarradle, Steve Wilder (and others). Janet has materials available for May 13 Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center booth. Should be geared for kids. All Earth Day T-shirts did not sell; maybe 30-40 sold.
Treasurer: $2,600 in checking account and running over budget. Pax World Fund investments now has a balance of $6,200. We are running significantly ($3,400) above budget. It's estimated that Centennial Group owes 50 × $6.16 + 30 × $7.16 = $522.80 and Gwinnett Group owes 60 × $6.16 = $184.80 for the Earth Day T-Shirts.
Conservtn: No report as Chris was injured and could not attend. Janet reported that Chris was working with Glen Grozman and OldCastle Concrete Company. OldCastle was receptive to improving the situation and getting publicity. Janet attended conservation meeting and about 5-6 people attended. Bianca Lee wants a project for 40-50 people for one day to do a massive clean-up (or other project). Larry Winslett, Bettye Harris, and Frank Carl applied for the Southeast Regional Conservation Coordinator's job held by Sam Collier.
AdoptStream: Chemical monitoring scheduled for May 20. Big fish (6") and now getting non-zero concentrations of nitrates and phosphates. Janet is helped the Gwinnett Group do a stream monitoring and had ten people show up. Probably half were from the Atlanta group after her mention of it at the last meeting. It went well. The sight got a "good" rating. We all went out to Jeffrey's sports bar afterwards for some rejuvenating refreshments.
Outings: Lee had conducted an outings leadership training class with 12-13 attendees. Had two SNAFUs: 1) meeting location had changed from Geosphere after they notified Lee that they were undergoing construction to GeoCenter and had to pay $200; 2) the outings leader manual page numbers were messed up. Since the training session, Lee sent out follow-up letters. Most participants had a clear idea of what to do.
One Club: Most outing leader class attendees stayed for the One Club kickoff dinner, which was catered. Larry Winslett was very helpful with hikes and maps based on conservation issues. Herb will be meeting with the National Sierra Club One Club mentor and a steering committee to get the concept going. One possible concern is the lack of conservation leaders interest; Larry Winslett will be asked to inform the conservation leaders of upcoming One Club events.
Membership: Finished last of the postcards. Carolyn mentioned that according to the last FRIP report that 18 new members joined in 1Q2000 (a new high). New dues for Sierra Club are $40 (regular) and $30 (introductory). It's OK to use up old brochures with older prices.
Store: Herb stated that more stuff to go into store, e.g., a box of books. For the next meeting Herb will be in France and Ted will staff the store. Earth Day T-shirts will still be at full price in May. Calendars will be sent back for credit, usually takes 6-8 weeks. For 2001 calendars, only the engagement and wilderness calendars will be made and sold.
Web Page: No report. Sue Anne Brenner wants to publish something on the website, which would have to be vetted by the ExCom.
Program: May's meeting will be Peter Kirby about the Appalachian Southern Forests. June's meeting will have Harvey Young of DNR discussing the Greenspace program. For July discussion centered around an evening picnic at Candler Park (across from Epworth UMC) on 2nd Tuesday. August will be Henning von Schmeling of the Chattahoochee Nature Center on native Georgia plants. Sam Parry of Sierra Club Washington office will give a talk on human rights and the environment in September. Possible October meeting will be political action/voting issues done by Roger Buerki. November is still open. December is the holiday party. Southface called to say that July was open for them; maybe they could be scheduled for November.
Newsletter: Next newsletter will focus on Earth Day events: booths, service trips, etc.
New Items: The host of the 2nd Quarter Atlanta Group ExCom meetings will be at Ted Jackson's house, starting at 7:00 pm. Next meeting on June 6th. The address is 3188 Kensington Road, Avondale Estates.
