Fulton and DeKalb County Soil and Water Conservation Report October 2000
by Alan Toney
DeKalb District
Dell MacGregor and Doug Denton each gathered
in over 95% of the votes cast and won huge landslide victories in their recent
elections. They have a clear mandate that should make all the Soil and Water
Districts stronger and more effective. Many people in the Sierra Club worked
long and hard to help them get re-elected. We should offer special thanks to
Sue Anne Brenner, Bob Woodall, and Bryan Hager, as well as Doug and Dell
themselves who are both Sierra Club members.
Fulton District
Fulton County Soil and Water District has
finished their elections and Alan Toney and Preston Mason were victorious (by a
large margin). On behalf of Preston and myself, we'd like to personally thank
everyone who supported us in this election.
The City of Atlanta has made some progress in their efforts to build an effective program. They failed the State Environmental Protection Division's most recent review, but there are some promising signs. They gave out 58 stop work orders against bad developments last month. This is certainly more stop works than the City issued previously in all the years of its existence. They are still understaffed and under empowered by the upper echelon of city government including the Mayor, but I am encouraged by what I am seeing in the field. Fulton County issued over 300 stop work orders in August. This is an increase over the previous month, but this is understandable due to the increase in rainfall.
