Sierrans Rendezvous at the River - River Rendezvous 2002
by Janet Westervelt
On November 9, 2002 Atlanta area Sierrans will gather together at Oglethorpe University for the Third Annual Peachtree / Nancy Creek "River Rendezvous". If you live in northeast Atlanta inside the Perimeter, it is quite likely that you live in the Peachtree/Nancy Creek watershed. Sierrans will join many local individuals and watershed protection organizations in a one-day, watershed-wide monitoring event. The "River Rendezvous" is a great way for people to become involved with the care and protection of the water resources in their own backyard. Volunteer learn the techniques of water quality sampling, meet the residents of their communities involved in local water quality issues, and help make a difference in their community. The event is sponsored by the Peachtree/Nancy Creek Technical Advisory Council (PNTAC), Oglethorpe University, and Georgia Adopt-a-Stream.
"River Rendezvous" is part of Georgia's "Rivers Alive", which is an annual volunteer river cleanup event, usually held throughout the month of October. Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Georgia Adopt-a-Stream Program, and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs' Keep Georgia Beautiful Program, and in cooperation with Help the Hooch and "River Awareness", Rivers Alive is a statewide event that targets cleanups across all waterways in the State of Georgia including streams, rivers, lakes, and wetlands. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources.
Georgia has 70,150 miles of streams and rivers that need our help! These waterways provide us with fresh drinking water and great recreational opportunities, like canoeing, swimming, and fishing. Everyone contributes to pollution in our streams. Please take the opportunity to help by giving something back to the environment! Help us clean our rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands by joining in support of events like Rivers Alive and River Rendezvous.
Results from all these volunteer efforts will be posted on line at http://www.littlenancy.org/ . River Rendezvous is one of the many projects participating in the "Annual River's Alive" state wide clean-up and awareness campaign for Georgia's waterways. Information about this and Georgia Adopt-A-Stream and be found at http://www.riversalive.org/ .
