Unincorporated DeKalb County Solid Waste Alert

A new Chief Executive Officer, Vernon Jones, will be taking over duties in DeKalb County in January and he needs to hear from citizens. The transition team is busy with budget at this point and have no one looking at environmental issues. This is an important time to speak out for the environment by asking CEO Jones to budget and implement an effective plan to reduce the waste going to landfills in DeKalb County by 25%. Eventhough he cannot pass policies, he can lead efforts to do so.

Wasting our recyclable and reusable materials in landfills or incinerators not only cost taxpayer dollars and local jobs, but it increases air and water pollution, and impacts communities that have to host these landfills and incinerators. On average 10,910 tons of material each day went into DeKalb's landfills in 1999. This is 4 times the next highest county in Georgia.

The lack of effective recycling in DeKalb County and its long-standing policy of using tax dollars to landfill, not reduce waste, must be reversed by the DeKalb Board of Commissioners with the CEO's support. Let CEO Jones hear from you today: call the CEO's office at 404-371-2881.

Please share your ideas for better recycling in DeKalb and any response you get from CEO Jones or his staff. For more information, contact Bob Woodall at 404-266-0820.
