2013 Wilderness Georgia Photo Contest

  2013 Wilderness Georgia Photo Contest

Purpose: To educate the public about Georgia’s designated Wilderness Areas and help promote the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

 

Eligibility:

  • This is an open contest with no divisions for age, etc.
  • You do not have to be a Sierra Club member to enter this contest
  • Each contestant may enter up to four photos beginning April 1, 2013
  • Photos can be all in one category or divided among all or some categories
  • Digital alterations: Images should be minimally manipulated — the goal is to depict nature as one would see and experience it in the field
  • Images should have been taken in the last two years by the photographer submitting the entry form and should be from any designated Wilderness Area in Georgia. For list visit: http://www.wilderness.net

Categories (all locations must be identified):

  • Large Scenic or Landscapes (think Ansel Adams)
  • Intimate Landscapes (think Eliot Porter, flowers, rocks, water, etc.)
  • People in the Landscape (people enjoying our wilderness areas)
  • Wild Animals in the Landscape

Submissions:

  • Submissions for judging will consist of up to four prints, the entry form, and the entry fee mailed or placed in a manila envelope
  • The deadline for submissions will be June 1, 2013
  • Submissions should be mailed to: Wilderness Photo Contest, c/o Sierra Club, Georgia Chapter, 743B East College Ave., Decatur, Ga. 30030
  • Each print must be 8” x 10” or 8-1/2” x 11"
  • Printed on photo paper
  • Each image must have the photographer’s name, photo title, location and viewing orientation on the back
  • The submission envelope must have the photographer’s name on it as well

Entry Fee: Checks should be made payable to the “Georgia Sierra Club” for the entry fee is $25 (non-refundable)

Judges:

  • Phil Zinsmeister, Ga. Sierra Club Wildlands Committee
  • Larry Winslett, Ga. Sierra Club Conservation Co-Chair
  • Mike Boatright, Pres. Southeastern Photographic Society
  • Naomi Thompson, Stone Mtn. Park Education Department (Alt)

Winners and Recognition:

  • First, second, and third places, and two honorable mentions will be selected in each category
  • Winners will be notified by July 1, 2013
  • Winning images will be hung as a part of “Atlanta Celebrates Photography” at Confederate Hall at Stone Mountain Park
  • By being a part of this exhibit, winners will gain high visibility for their work
  • Winning images to be exhibited will have to be printed, mounted, and framed with black frames, white mats only
  • Maximum size is 100 total perimeter frame inches, minimum 60 inches
  • Selling of framed images will be up to the individuals (price with business card may be displayed)

Copyright:

  • The photographer retains full copyright to his or her images
  • The Georgia Sierra Club does request limited permission to use the photographs without compensation in educational materials, printed or electronic
  • They may also be used in news releases which may appear in third-party websites or other publications for the purpose of publicizing the contest
  • Winners will be asked to submit an electronic image for these uses.

Contest Dates and Other Notes:

  • Images will be received from April 1, 2013 to June 1, 2013
  • Winners will be announced and contacted by July 1, 2013
  • Printed images must be framed and ready for display by Sept. 1, 2013
  • Drop-off location TBA
  • The judges’ decisions will be final
  • If you would like your prints returned include with your submission a self addresses stamped envelope
